Image Creator: Ben Schumin | Original image Source: https://www.flickr.com/photos/64873675@N00/9806474636 | Image adheres to Creative Commons License – https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/

A fire alarm is a key part of your home’s security. Without a working fire alarm, you may not be alerted to fires within your property or potentially harmful amounts of carbon monoxide. Unfortunately, there are many properties within which a fire alarm isn’t properly installed or maintained; something that could pose a serious health risk to those within. While we do always recommend that you get fire alarms professionally installed, having an understanding of how a fire alarm is installed can help you maintain the overall system.

Location

The first stage of a fire alarm installation is selecting a suitable location. You preferably want somewhere relatively high up as smoke and harmful gasses naturally rise toward the ceiling. There are multiple locations that may give off frequent false alarms due to being regularly exposed to steam or smoke, you should always look to keep a fire alarm away from showers, heating appliances, as well as lamps. The recommended location for a fire alarm is usually along an escape route within the home, and it’s also recommended that you install a fire alarm on each floor if you have a multiple floor property.

Installation

Take your fire alarm and remove the front panel, there should be slots for screws clearly outlined which indicate where the alarm should be screwed into the ceiling or wall. Make sure the alarm is properly installed and won’t fall even when shaken.

Please note – depending on where you’re installing your fire alarm, you may need to make use of special wall plugs. Stability is vital for a fire alarm so make sure that your method of installation fits the wall or ceiling.

Activating the Alarm

Depending on the fire alarm model you’re using, the method for activating the alarm may vary slightly. Power sources come first – you need to discern whether your alarm runs off batteries or needs to be connected to property mains. Most commonly, fire alarms run off batteries and will simply need a fresh pair inserted to get them working.

From here on you might want to test the alarm to make sure it’s working as should. Press the test button on the front of your alarm to make sure it’s set up correctly; avoiding any issues, the alarm should now be good to go. Press the main button on the interface and you should see some indication that your home is now protected.

Please note – For regular fire alarms making use of batteries, you may wish to keep an eye out for the ‘Batteries Low’ light. This serves as an indicator that you may need to swap them out before they are unable to deliver the same level of functionality.

A popular upgrade within many homes that has been gaining traction over the last few years is that of LEDs. Light emitting diodes – or LEDs for short – are small semiconductors that produce light when given access to voltage. Available in a whole host of colours (sometimes even switching between multiple in a single LED), many people have been placing LEDs around their homes and properties to capitalise on both the aesthetic and mood-based benefits of doing so.

Around Televisions/Monitors

An unexpected benefit to utilising LEDs in tandem with televisions and monitors is the reduction in eye strain; for people who use these screens for hours at a time on a regular basis, this might be a key benefit to implementing them. The mood that LEDs can create are also a part of their fervent popularity with certain colour evoking certain emotional responses. Pure white can be a great way to keep yourself focused and alert, while a soft blue can help you mellow out after a stressful day.

One of the most common places you’re likely to see LEDs is within gaming set-ups and monitors. LEDs are a great way to illuminate your set-up as well as adding that iconic glowing effect many leading companies incorporate within their gaming peripherals.

Under Cabinets

Within some more constrained spaces, you may struggle to add lighting that fully illuminates all of the room; something especially common within cramped kitchens. Unless you’re a DYI expert, you’re likely not going to be comfortable drilling into your ceiling to add hanging lighting, so why not make use of a cheaper and easier alternative in LED lighting? Under cabinet LED lighting is especially common in showroom kitchens but also offers up and assortment of practical benefits.

Shelving

Placing LED lighting around shelving is a great way to draw attention to the space. Whether you’re a collector or simply want to show off some personal items, LED lighting around shelving can be a great way to shift visitors’ focus to a certain part of the room.

Under The Bed

For children who maybe aren’t so keen on sleeping in the dark, LED lighting can be a great way to add a comforting night light within the space. Colour-changing LED strips allow you to switch colours based on what you’re currently using the room for, or to simply match your mood.

Stairs

A great way to make use of LED lighting is by applying it to stairs or around handrailing. Depending on the amount of light coming in from outside, your property may get very dark during the night making it a challenge to safely get to the toilet. As well as adding to the overall safety, LED illuminated stairs give off a futuristic vibe bound to impress visitors.

Are you considering getting an energy audit but aren’t sure if you should get one? Is an energy audit worth it for the price they charge? In this blog, we will explain what an energy audit is, why it is important and what happens as a part of the process.

Why are Energy Audits Important?

Energy Audits are available to everyone, however, very few people end up actually getting an audit carried out when required, frequently this comes down to the price. An average energy audit can cost anywhere between £60 to £120. Despite that, energy audits are worth it because they can save you a great deal on your energy bills in the future. With energy bills increasing rapidly, this may be the best time to get an energy audit. An energy audit could also reduce your carbon footprint, something that is becoming more and more important to many homeowners. Depending on the house an energy audit can save you up to 30% on your energy bills which means more money to spend elsewhere.

What is an Energy Audit?

An energy audit is an assessment of your home or commercial building to determine if the building is energy efficient. Being energy-efficient means using less energy/electricity to power or heat up a home or building. After the assessment is finished the results will tell you about your home or building’s weaknesses and strengths when it comes to saving energy. Your building will get an energy star rating between 1 and 100. Anything over 75 means your home or building is a top performer.

What Happens in an Energy Audit?

In energy audits, there are three parts; evaluation, testing, and efficiency recommendations. In the evaluation part, the energy auditor will assess the inside and outside of your home and building to determine any energy usage and problem areas. The auditor will analyse all heating and cooling systems that may be wasting energy. Auditors will also check the HVAC system and insulation levels. This means they will check your basement and exterior attic walls to see how much heat is being lost. They will also factor in things such as amount of doors and windows to give a more accurate asssment.

After the evaluation, the auditor moves on to the testing phase. One of the tests they use is called the airtightness test or, as it is refered to by some, the blower door test. The airtightness test checks for any leakage of air in a house or building. It aims to find any cracks or holes that might be leaking heat outside. A fan pulls out interior air through the cracks and holes within the building. An auditor will use a feather or their hand to see or feel where the wind is coming from.

The final step after all the assessments is creating a list for the customer on recommendations, to make their home or building more energy efficient.

Imagine how amazing it would be if you could listen to a song, radio, or podcast from anywhere in your house with a push of a button! In this blog, we will discuss what a Multi-Room Audio System is and where you can get one from.

What is a Multi-Room Audio System?

A Multi-Room Audio System is the ability to listen to music, radio, or podcast from anywhere within your house. Speakers are cleverly placed in several rooms so that when you’re walking throughout your house you can hear them in each room. Every speaker is connected to your phone and depending on what system you choose, you’ll be able to play different songs, radio stations or podcasts in each room simultaneously.

How it Works

Around two decades ago a Multi-Room Audio System meant a lot of wires throughout your house. If you want the best audio speakers, you would still have to do that today. However, professionals would hide the wires in the walls and ceilings to make your house look clean. Due to the rapid development of technology, speakers today are completely wireless and connect over WI-FI. This connection of WI-FI links the speakers together and your phone, which allows the speakers to play simultaneously. This makes it simple for the user.

What is the Best Multi-Room Audio System?

There isn’t a straight answer to this question due to some Multi-Room Audio Systems being so different. One of the many products called the ‘Power Dynamics 4-Zone Wireless Smart Audio System’ has 4 listening zones. This product includes six ceiling speakers and four Wi-Fi amplifier modules. All the speakers are connected over Wi-Fi.

If you are looking for more of an affordable option, the ‘White Wall Outdoor Speakers’ or the ‘3 Zone Bluetooth Speaker Background Music Kit’ should do the trick… Both Multi-Room Audio Systems include 2 microphone ports if you want to sing your heart out to your favourite song.

If you would like a low profile, mid-range price, the ‘5 Zone Wi-fi Streaming Speaker Kit’ is perfect for you. The kit includes 10 70-watt ceiling speakers that connect to your phone. The connectivity technology is both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

Have you ever wondered why RBG LEDs cost way less to run than a standard light bulb? In this blog, we’ll be going through how an RGB LED and bulbs work. We will also be talking about the benefits of LEDs compared to bulbs.

How Does an RGB LED work?

RGB stands for Red, Green and Blue. Each RGB LED light is made up of three individual lights that only display Red, Green and Blue. These colours work together to make other colours by dimming an individual colour or increasing the intensity of another colour. For example to make white light, the Red, Green and Blue all glow at the same brightness so that it tricks your eyes into seeing white light. Within the LED is a microchip that allows the user to create any colour. Most LEDs connect to a remote control or your phone to change the colour.

How Does a Standard Bulb work?

To light up a blub is quite simple. When the bulb is plugged in, the electric current goes through the wires and passes through a hot, thin filament. The filament gets so hot that the filament glows white (depending on the bulb). For example, if you’ve heated metal we understand that it glows red. If you heat it more it glows white. Heat emits infrared light however, we can’t see infrared light. If you heat an object hot enough it will emit a bio-product called visible light. This is how a bulb works.

The Difference

In conclusion, LEDs only emit visible light and can change colour, unlike light bulbs. Light bulbs require more energy because they have to heat a filament inside them and will be hot if the bulb is on.

Why do LEDs cost a lot less to run?

LEDs are more energy-efficient because they only emit visible light. This means a 10 watt LED bulb does the same work as a 60-watt incandescent bulb(askinglot.com). Whereas a bulb emits ultraviolet and infrared light which are bio-products to the consumer because the customer only wants visible light. Producing more light (like ultraviolet and infrared) that isn’t needed means the light bulb needs more energy. Unfortunately, that means higher electric bills for the customer. If you are looking for LED Lighting Installation, we are the go-to LED electricians in the East Midlands.

Why Should I Choose a LED over a Regular Light Bulb?

Consumers are choosing LEDs over light bulbs because of the number of benefits they provide. LEDs are more energy-efficient which saves customers money on their energy bills. Due to less consumption of energy, your carbon footprint will be reduced. Depending on the LED you purchase, it can change to any colour to suit the mood you are in. LEDs do not get hot because they don’t emit heat like light bulbs. LEDs are recyclable and they have a longer life span than bulbs.

Electric vehicles are becoming more and more popular every day. This is because they offer a number of benefits that gas-powered vehicles simply can’t match. One of the best things about electric vehicles is that they can be plugged into an electrical outlet to recharge, which means you can charge them at home or at work. In this blog post, we will discuss the many benefits of EV charging!

Why Has EV Charging Become so Important?

Electric vehicle charging has become more important in recent years because the number of electric vehicles on the road has been increasing. As of 2018, there were over two million electric vehicles worldwide, and that number is expected to grow exponentially in the coming years. This means that the infrastructure for EV charging needs to keep up with demand, and that’s why EV charging stations are popping up all over the place.

Benefits of EV Charging

There are many benefits to EV charging, both for drivers and for the environment. Perhaps the most obvious benefit is that it saves drivers money.

Electric vehicles are cheaper to operate than gas-powered vehicles, because you only need to charge them once or twice a week instead of buying gas every few days. In addition, EV charging is better for the environment because it doesn’t produce emissions as gas-powered vehicles do.

Another big benefit of EV charging is that it helps reduce grid congestion. When electric vehicles are plugged in in order to recharge, they use up electricity from the grid. This can cause problems if everyone tries to recharge their car at the same time, but EV charging stations help alleviate this problem by spreading out the demand for electricity.

Finally, EV charging is also a great way to support renewable energy. Many EV charging stations are powered by solar panels or wind turbines, which means that they help reduce our reliance on fossil fuels.

How to Install an EV Charger

Do you ever stop to think about where electricity comes from? How is it made? We take electricity for granted, but it’s an amazing invention that we can’t live without. In this post, we will discuss how electricity is created and the process that electricians go through to provide us with this essential resource. Be sure to read on to find out more

How Electricity Is Made?

Electricity is created by using a generator. This machine converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. The most common type of generator is a hydroelectric power plant, which uses water to create electricity.

In a hydroelectric power plant, water from a river or dam is used to spin the blades of a turbine. As the turbine spins, it creates kinetic energy. This kinetic energy is then converted into electrical energy by the generator. The electricity is then sent to power plants, where it is transformed into the high-voltage electricity that we use in our homes.

How Do Electricians Play a Role?

Electricians are the skilled professionals who install and maintain the electrical systems in our homes and businesses. Without electricians, we would not have access to this essential resource. If you’re ever in need of an electrician, be sure to call a reputable company like ourselves here at MT Electrical. We will be on hand to help you with all of your electrical needs!

Electricians are responsible for ensuring that the electricity in our homes is safe to use. They install and maintain wiring, circuit breakers, and other electrical equipment. Electricians also play a role in creating electricity by installing solar panels and wind turbines.

Solar panels convert sunlight into electrical energy, while wind turbines use the kinetic energy of wind to generate electricity. These renewable resources are becoming increasingly popular as we look for ways to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels.

Why Do We Need Electricity?

We use electricity for just about everything in our lives. From turning on the lights to cooking our food, almost everything we do involves using electricity. It’s hard to imagine a world without it! Electricity is an essential part of our lives, and we need to be careful with how we use it. We should always make sure to unplug appliances when we’re not using them and be mindful of energy-saving practices. By doing our part, we can help preserve this valuable resource for future generations.

A Brief History of Electricity?

Electricity has been around for centuries, but it wasn’t until the late 1800s that it began to be used in homes and businesses. In 1879, Thomas Edison invented the light bulb, which paved the way for the widespread use of electricity. Since then, electrical technology has come a long way. We now have a wide range of appliances and devices that rely on electricity to function. Electricians are constantly working to keep up with these advances and ensure that our electrical systems are up-to-date and safe.

It’s that time of year again, electrical inspection season is upon us! If you’re like most people, you may be wondering what exactly you need to do to prepare your home for an electrical inspection. Don’t worry, we’re here to help. In this blog post, we will discuss everything you need to know about preparing for an electrical inspection. We’ll cover topics such as electrical safety precautions, required documentation, and common problems that inspectors look for. Read on to learn more!

Electrical Safety Precautions

When preparing your home for an electrical inspection, it is important to take electrical safety precautions. One of the most important things you can do is make sure that all of the electrical outlets in your home are covered with appropriate electrical safety covers. Electrical Inspectors will be looking for uncovered outlets, and they may issue a fine if they find any. In addition, you should make sure that all cords are in good condition and that there are no exposed wires.

Required Documentation

Next, check with your local council to see what kind of documentation is required for electrical inspections in your area. In most cases, it will be a simple certificate or letter from an electrician stating that the house has passed inspection with no problems found during the initial examination process at all times since construction (or last major renovation). You should also keep any other documents related to electrical work done on the property handy so we can verify them as needed during our visit. If there are questions about anything specific such as permits issued by another jurisdiction when needed prior installation along those lines; this could include things like city building permits which would show us they have been inspected previously and not just recently because they are new wires being installed without preparing your home for electrical inspection

Common Electrical Problems Inspectors Look For

There are several common problems that inspectors look for during an electrical inspection. These include but are not limited to;

Loose electrical wires or outlets that are not properly secured. These can create a fire hazard if they get too close together, so make sure everything is in its place before the inspector arrives.

Old wiring that may not be up to code anymore. This can cause electrical shocks and even fires if it gets too hot, so make sure everything looks good before the inspector arrives.

Electrical outlets without proper grounding or GFCI protection (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter). These will trip when there is an overload on the circuit, so make sure your home has them installed in all the right places.

Improperly sized wiring or fuses. This can lead to electrical fires, so it’s important to have everything checked by a professional before the inspector, by following these tips, you can help ensure that your home is ready for an electrical inspection.

If you are a new homeowner, there are some things you need to know about your home’s electrical system. Electrical safety is important, and it is crucial that you know how to use your home’s electrical equipment safely. In this blog post, we will discuss some basic electrical tips for homeowners. We will also provide some safety tips to help keep you and your family safe while using electricity in your home.

Use an Appropriate Power Cord

The first and most important electrical safety tip is never use a power cord with three prongs instead of two. Using three-pronged cords can lead to electrocution or serious injury if they come into contact with water, which can be very dangerous in the home. If you must use a three-pronged plug, make sure that it has an insulated wire running inside it so that electricity won’t flow through your body if there’s an accident.

Rubber Gloves

You should always wear rubber gloves when working around electricity. Rubber gloves are made of a material that will insulate your hands from electrical shock, so they’re very important in preventing electrocution injuries. You should also be careful when using power tools and keep them away from water sources like sinks or bathtubs because they can cause serious injury by allowing electricity through their blades if they come into contact with wet surfaces.

Neglecting Electrical Cords

It is important to keep electrical cords out of the way. Cords that are lying on the floor can be a tripping hazard, and they can also become damaged over time if they’re constantly being stepped on or run over. It’s a good idea to coil up excess cords and secure them with zip-ties or tape so that they’re not a nuisance or safety hazard.

Overloading Electrical Outlets

Never overload an electrical outlet by plugging in too many appliances. This can cause a fire or even an electric shock. If you have more appliances than outlets, you can buy an extension cord to give yourself more space, but make sure that it is rated for the amount of power that your devices are using.

Unplug Your Appliances

Always unplug all of your appliances before leaving them unattended for long periods. This is especially important with heaters and space heaters because they can cause a fire if left on without being monitored. If you have pets or children in the house, it’s also advisable to unplug any electrical devices that aren’t necessary while they’re away from home so that there won’t be an accident waiting to happen when someone returns home later on.

Electricity Travels Through Wires

Finally, remember that electricity travels through wires – so always make sure they’re insulated properly before plugging anything into them! If you follow these simple electrical tips for homeowners and use common sense when using your home’s equipment safely, then there won’t be any problems at all with electrocution or injury in your family. Just remember to stay alert while using power cords around children or pets because accidents happen every day even when it seems like nothing serious could possibly go wrong!

When a house is full of electrical devices then overtime there is a chance that some problems may occur. Flickering lights, damaged appliances and higher electricity bills could be signs that you have an electricity problem in your home. Seen below are a few ordinary and common electrical problems that can occur in the home.

A Circuit Overload

This problem is extremely common and the main way to solve it is just by using some common sense. It is pretty obvious to the average Joe that overloading an outlet with multiple electrical devices that are all switched on at the same time is a bad idea! Be sure to be mindful as to where you connect devices around your home, ensure the temperature is not too high and there are no obstacles blocking the electrical current. The best tip is to spread out your power usage throughout your home and use different outlets instead of concentrating all of the electricity around one outlet.

Repetitive Electrical Surges

Now an electrical surge can be caused by many things, these include lightning strikes, faulty wiring, damage to a power line and more. An electrical surge will usually only last for half a second, yet constant and repetitive electrical surges can damage your electrical items over time and shorten their lifespan. The source of frequent electrical surges could be an electrical device that is attached to your wiring or the home grid. Remove any cheaply made electricals from your outlets and if the problem still remains then you should consult one of our established electricians at MT Electrical.

Broken Light Switches

If you notice that your dimmer switch does not adjust to the right level of light that it is supposed to, this could be a sign of poor workmanship or sub-standard electrical products. If your lights and dimmers are brand new and they have this problem then this could indicate faulty wiring. If this is the case then be sure to contact an established electrician.

Receiving an Electric Shock

The majority of us have received an electric shock or at least a static shock before. It’s a quick ‘zap’ and shocks you for around half a second. Electric shocks are quite painful they are more severe however, it teaches us that you should never underestimate the danger of electricity! An electric shock typically occurs when a device is being switched off or on, the quick switch in current can cause a brief shock and indicate that this outlet is not fit for use. A way of finding this out is by testing another device on this same outlet, yet if you are afraid of more electric shocks then get a professional to look at it.
