Tips on Using an EV Charger at Home

With many car companies planning to go fully electric from 2030, there is an increased interest and demand for electric cars. With this, also comes an increase in EV charging installations as many people will pay for the convenience of being able to charge their cars from home. Below are some tips on using an EV charger at home.

How to Use an EV Charger at Home

You should ensure that you have a dedicated charging point at home, this is because it is much more convenient, faster and safety assured than driving to a random charging point at a service station. You can use an EVSE supply cable within a 3 pin plug socket as an emergency backup to charge your car. The EV charger is weatherproof so there will be no need to worry about water damage or electrocution from rain, just ensure that when you are plugging in your car that everything is completely dry. You may want to wear rubber gloves just on the off chance that something goes wrong although they most likely will not.

What Is the Cost of an EV Charger?

Perhaps the make or break factor for those considering going all-electric. The cost of a home EV charging point is around £450. Electric car drivers will benefit from a £350 grant OZEV grant when they have installed a home charger. This is good for the buyer because once this has occurred you will only pay for the amount of electricity that you use. The usual charge for electricity in the UK is about 16p per kWh. You must also consider that although electricity is cheaper than petrol and renewable, you will use more electricity over time.

How Often Should You Use Your EV Charger?

Following on from the previous point, EV charging is quite a frequent process as most batteries in cars will not last a long time. Most drivers tend to charge their cars overnight as this will ensure that the battery is full in the morning. All home EV chargers will also stop when the car battery is full so you won’t have to worry about any overheating or possible electrical fires. The longer you go without charging, the more money you can save. Night electricity rates are significantly lower and can make it so that it only costs as little as 2p per mile!

How to Get an EV Charger Installed

To ensure there will be no tragic accidents or complications, you must get a professional electrician to install an EV charger in your house. With the installation process, you are going to need to install the EV charging point in your garage or an exterior wall. Ensure that the EV charging point is within range of the mains and connected to it safely with no chance of displacement of detachment.  A standard EV charger installation will take around 3 hours, this will depend on the complexity of the situation and the layout of your electrics.
