One of the biggest hazards in the home is your electricals, and this is particularly a concern when you have pets. Whether you leave your phone plugged in overnight to charge or turn the washing machine on to do a load while you go for a walk, there are plenty of seemingly obvious things you can do to avoid a major electrical or potential fire hazard if your pet becomes entangled in the cords, or decides to chew on them. You may also want to consult a professional like us at MT Electrical, to advise you on electrical safety.
Here are a number of things you can do to make your electricals much safer for your pet without having to stop using power completely.
Keep Electrical Cables Out of Sight
Although you may think placing your electrical cables at high places will keep them away from your pet, this, however, is not the case. Pets such as cats, will climb a surface and get what they want if it intrigues them enough, this will usually happen if the cables are dangling as your pet may see this as a form of toy yet may end up with a nasty shock instead!
Use Good Quality Equipment
Don’t skimp when buying power cords, extension cords, or anything else that you use for your electronics. Yes, it can be a pain to pay a higher price for something as uninspiring as a phone charger cord, but cheaper cords are much more likely to create electrical hazards through sparks or overheating. If cheap cords are exposed in the house, you don’t want your pets able to get near them as they could cause injury. You can even pay for cords that have a bitter agent in the material to discourage your pet from chewing on it.
Create an Electricity Free Zone
This is more suited to pets like rabbits or a small kitten, as if when you are leaving your pet unattended, you could create a small space away from any power outlets and electrical hazards to put your pet into in order to prevent them from causing harm to themselves, make sure this is only for a short time though as your pet might get bored and restless if they have nothing to do for a long period of time.
Unplug Unused Cords
The majority of us tend to leave tv cords plugged in whenever we aren’t using it as this is more convenient for when we want to watch it again. If you have a mischievous pet perhaps, they could cause some havoc when you least expect it also it only takes a single accident while you’re asleep during the night and your pet is wandering around for any electrical hazards to cause a fire to happen without your knowledge.
Train Your Pet
This way will make sure your pet won’t hurt themselves or cause any damage even if they were surrounded by electrical cables. If you teach your pet that certain areas in the house with power cords or outlets are off-limits, they’re going to be much less likely to go to those areas. You’ll firstly need to understand how to train your particular pet. Cats respond negatively to a bitter agent being applied to an area, and so they’ll tend to avoid a space if you spray it with citrus spray. Smaller animals like rabbits, ferrets or guinea pigs will be warned away by loud noises, like claps or thumps, being made when they got close to any electrical hazards.
