How Does an RGB LED work?

RGB stands for Red, Green and Blue. Each RGB LED light is made up of three individual lights that only display Red, Green and Blue. These colours work together to make other colours by dimming an individual colour or increasing the intensity of another colour. For example to make white light, the Red, Green and Blue all glow at the same brightness so that it tricks your eyes into seeing white light. Within the LED is a microchip that allows the user to create any colour. Most LEDs connect to a remote control or your phone to change the colour.
 

How Does a Standard Bulb work?

To light up a blub is quite simple. When the bulb is plugged in, the electric current goes through the wires and passes through a hot, thin filament. The filament gets so hot that the filament glows white (depending on the bulb). For example, if you’ve heated metal we understand that it glows red. If you heat it more it glows white. Heat emits infrared light however, we can’t see infrared light. If you heat an object hot enough it will emit a bio-product called visible light. This is how a bulb works.
 

The Difference

In conclusion, LEDs only emit visible light and can change colour, unlike light bulbs. Light bulbs require more energy because they have to heat a filament inside them and will be hot if the bulb is on.
 

Why do LEDs cost a lot less to run?
